From sacred to profane…

Climate change, government sponsored Superfund cleanup sites, genetically modified organisms, pollution of air, land and water… the inherent meaning of “landscape” is shifting from picturesque to profane throughout our surrounding world. Pivoting on the threat the enigmatic figures may imply, or the reaction they may provoke, these social interventions reflect a collective awareness of how humans now view the landscapes we are ultimately responsible for creating.

Under the pseudonym AREA, artists Sean Hovendick and John Wesley Mannion combine site-specific performance with photographic documentation to investigate these shifts and the evolving relationship of people and place.
